Welcome

Å

This blog is for the project "Gurmukhi Dictionary". I will post updates on this blog and you can post suggestions and comments. Tonight (EDT) I will post the schema for the database that'll used to host the words and phrases. If you want to submit a file of words/meanings you should submit in this format:

punjabi word (in gurmukhi font): punjabi word synonyms (gurmukhi font): english word: english word synonyms

For example:

tur : qur, cl : walk, stroll

use it in a sentence:

myh qurn] hy]: i wan to walk

isingh,

First of all I would like to say that May Waheguru Bless you for taking on this great task of seva and help you along the way to finish it so that all of the future Sikh and Non-sikh generations would remember you by the good work you have done. Thanks for setting this blog up so quickly. I will try to send you the file on Monday. What would happen from this point on? Would you be setting up a file of some sort where any body can edit words. One of the things I was planning on doing was to copy and paste words from punjabi newspapers and to maniulate the data and sort it in excel or something and then write definitions for each word. But I couldn't copy and paste the punjabi text somehow. Is it the font or something else. May be you can shed some light.

okay, here's when you're going to run into problems IF we don't decide on a gurmukhi font.

I say we use amrlipi.

so in excel select that column (by clicking on the very top of the column) > right click on that highlighted column > cell formatting > then in there somewhere you select the font, select amrLipi font > click ok
and deselect the column and you should be good to go for cutting and pasting gurmukhi fonts

i'll post the project plan and i'm hoping by the end of next weekend (a 3 day weekend for me) i should have a prototype up and running just to collect information.

i was thinking about calling up Ajit (newspaper) in jalandhar since they're the only major publication that posts gurmukhi on web (on monday). and see if they can give me pointers on this project. in return i'll help them with their mysql server problems.

also, i want to do this right. i don't just want a single punjabi word with an english word translation. i want to go the whole ten yards. i keep coming up with new things to add to the project. so i figured i take apart microsoft word dictionary and see how they did theirs.

so far i have:
word: synonyms : english translation
word's other form (adjective, verb and so on...)
and a sentence
because it's going to be almost impossible to go back and add all this in.
