do you podcast?

yahoo just started this site:

http://podcasts.yahoo.com/search?p=panjabi&c=b

listen to the number 4. it's pretty interesting...the guy is hindu punjabi!

i searched for "punjabi" "sikh" and "panjabi" and i only found a couple of podcasts. it's a really good idea.

but anyways...i'been working on some stuff for project: gurmukhi....the "surprise" is sooooo much more tedious than i thought was going to be...but it's coming along just fine and i think once i complete one of these...i think i can actually streamline the process. so gimme a bit more time.

but i have these Gurmukhi books that my dad just brought back from punjab. they are soooooo much better than the ones that my mom brought. i don't mean to be racist but these were my instructions to my dad "only buy the ones that are published/created/written by sikhs" and i guess i was right. i keep arguing with people on the net that Gurmukhi is most important to Sikhs and no other sect of people. Hindus or any other group of people have no vested interest in Gurmukhi.

anyways...i think i'm going to start selling them at cost (whatever is written on the book)...i don't want any excuses!!! i will make no profit at all from this...no, i won't be taking any money for my time either....this is just another way to promote Gurmukhi. BTW, my one year loves these books. and my wife is learning Gurmukhi along (with her).

These books are ONLY 15 rupees per book and the quality is so much better than what i've seen...

look for a web site for this project early next year (yes, i'm actually being realistic about this) :)...

Isingh,

What are the titles of these books that your dad brought? I may be interested in purchasing some of them? I have been trying to fill my bookcase with good punjabi/sikhs/Indian books so I can have a mini-library for the kids. I was watching NOVA last night on E=Mc2 equation of Einstein. One thing that was common in all of these great scientists was that they loved to read and explore.

Isingh Ji, I have posted my comment on sikhnet but I think we should use your blog, therefore, I am also going to paste that comment on this site.

If God wanted us to think that men and women are equal then why did he chose 10 men?

Logical is derived from past experiences, knowledge, and observation. Again, our minds have limitations to it. No matter how advance we may feel.

I am assuming that we are trying to think about God’s thoughts now. That’s what Albert Einstein wanted to know about God’s thoughts after years and years of research. Matter of fact, for thousands of years Yogis meditated to know God, but everyone has failed.

During childhood, when they are about 3-4yrs old children have fascinating attraction towards the fire. The different color of the fire attracts these little kids, and they want to hold that fire in their hands. So, a child may walk towards the fire babbling in excitement, but when a parent see it they will immediately pull back the child from the fire. However, the child will keep on trying to run closer to this fire, but every attempt goes wasted, therefore, they begin to throw a tantrum. A child does not understand why his parent is NOT letting him or her to grab the fire with their hands. Child has no knowledge about the fire and its consequences. But the parent is aware that their child will be BURNED badly and it will cause lot of pain and suffering to the child. But the child consistently throws tantrums because it is beyond his minds grasp.

Therefore, we are Gods creation and we have limitations of understanding his creation, just like that child.

It is written in Japji shahib: that we can keep on contemplating up on God for million times yet it will not come to our grasp. Therefore, I cannot describe the thoughts of God. Does God have different standards for gender? Personally I do not think that it is true. Things that do not come to our grasp breeds’ skeptism and thus leave us astray! But definitely there is a reason to that cause. The only way we can come up answers to these kinds of questions is find the provenience of its cause, which could be seen only looking the historical evidence that we have before us.

If in twenty-first century men are having hard time accepting women to do sewa and nothing more then how one accept women as their spiritual leader or even Guru. I think this idea might have failed many centuries back because of mentality of men. What ever brews in our minds is our own creation and God has nothing to do with it.

All these Great souls that came to earth, Jesus ji, Mosses ji, and all of Guruji’s endured pain which was afflicted by men. Our fifth Guruji was tortured for five days, then ninth guruji, tenth guru ji and sabhibzaday! God knew about that these great souls would be humiliated and tortured to death by MEN. And what was the reason to torture these great souls?

If women had come forward then the consequences of tortured could have been worse, such as massive raping and then torturing to death. Again, if there were no women then there would have been any creation. Women might have proven their role to God not to men or society as a whole.

Maybe God thought that woman already suffers enough pain during their lifetime, which is by being a daughter, sister then mother. The pain mother bears during birth cannot be described with words. Yes, now anesthetics are given but still there is lot of pain. Women have been sacrificing their desires, dreams as a daughter, so that their parents could be proud of them. Then they sacrifice themselves as sisters so that their brothers could excel in life. But the light of hope in their hearts never goes dim. Then they expect that when they get married they might have equality in every aspect of life. Poor naïve women forgot that they are going to marry same men for whom they have been sacrificing themselves in the past.

Only God knows, we can derive reasons and that’s it.

other reason could be:

1)Men have been considered as father figure and have authority, due to its physical appearance and strength, and men are able to protect themselves and their territory from the intruders. Maybe due to these reasons it is easy to bow your head to a male figure rather than a femal figure.

2) Soul does not have any gender. My soul is put in to male shell so I represent myself as a male. However, this same soul can be put inot other shells

3) God does not have gender

4)Foundation of Golden temple was placed by a muslim, and Great muslim poets and singers were allowed to recite praises of God during the times to Guruji and upto early 1900's. Then all of sudden rules began to change and no muslim or other religion philosopher was allowed in the Golden temple.
Even our Bani's are being made short to save 10 minutes. Who is behind these acts! Are those really SIKHS at Golden Temple or Government created SIKHS who are slowly eroding the fundamentals of SIKHISM.

Sikh Religion is very powerful because it respects all religions equally and women are treated equally. Simran and sewa are essential part of Sikhism. If these essential points are Taken away from sikhism then the religion will fall on its face.

Another interesting revolution is being brought by these same agents is that if you are not Amrit dhari then you should not be allowed to do sewa in the Gurdawara and also in the langar hall.

Lot of Amrit dharis are refusing to have langar at the Gurdawara because it was prepared by NON Amrit dharis.

Well, who is responsible for these kind of TACTICS. I am sure that REAL Amrit Dhari's are beyond this point, therefore, these FAKE Amrit dhari's are being CREATED to DESTROY sikhism.

We NEED to do SOMETHING About it! Remember KOOKA days, these are Sikhs but believe in their own created Guru's. These people were being favored big time by the Government of India ( indira) and there were so many causalities caused by the refute back then.

THerefore, my speculation is that maybe Indian Govt is playing a role by bringing these FAKE Amrit DHARI's to the surface so that SLOwlY the fundamentals of sikhism is ERODED away!

One more point came to my mind:

when Guru Gobind Singh ji asked for a head he never stated that he wants a MALE head, but insisted five times that he is in need of a Head.

this head could been from Male or Female. Only Five MEN had the courage to stand up and give their head. Again, women were not included in the five pyaraas!

Does this mean that women don't have courage to sacrifice? Again, the answer is NO. Women have sacrificed themsleves and their infants to Moguls and never gave in!

So, what could be the reason that not even one woman stood up and offered her head to Guruji?

Again, we have to turn back to history and find out the answers! Maybe women never felt that courage to come forward in society since they have been resented by the society according to the status. there is lot of Psychoanaylsis behing this!!!

Briefly, women never had courage to come forward or never thought of leading people. Maybe they just wanted to enjoy the blissful moments in their hearts!

I am not trying to Convince you of my idea's but I'm learning from this process too! Remember that we are Students! we need to have constructive discussions NOT Arguements.

Its not about winning or losing discussion, but to expand our own horizon so that we are able to life from every different angle.

Chardi kala!

Gurinder,

just today I gave presentation on women and leadership. Looked at research trends to answer followng questions-
Can women be leaders?
Do Female and Male leaders Differ in their behavior and effectivness?
Why do so few women leaders reach the top?
I can't beleive it is 2005 and in US I am looking at research ( started in 1994) to answer these questions. Can imagin how it was for women almost 500 years back in Punjab.
I will post more on your comments next week. Also, everybody has different prespective and it is always good to know what other person is thinking ( I may not agree but nothing wrong in being aware of other person's opinion)

Thanks,
Simran

Simran,

I look foward reading your post. It would be great to learn other people's prespective on this issue. I think only learning is not enough. we need to practice whatever we have learned from our experiences. If we do not practice what we have learned then what is the use of that knowlegde.

Wah ji wah! Nice to see project gurmukhi back.

if I may be so bold, any significance for the the colon after 'project' in you blog heading? (I think 'project girmukhi' without the colon sounds better).

Blogger Sikhi Seeker said...

..I happen to agree with MSingh...there is this adrenaline rush associated to the lack of colon there :)

Godo luck with the 'surprise' :Ds

fine! but there was a reason behind the colon i tell you! :)

Let me guess - project gurmukhi is really 2 projects in one, and each dot of the colon represents one of the projects....

On the other hand it could represent miri and piri..

ummm no! :)
it was supposed to read in the following manner:

PROJECT (emphasis on project) drumroll! DUM DUM DUM DUM GURMUKHI!!!! :)))

Project: Gurmukhi comprises of a lot of subprojects such as a dictionary, online library (actualy library where you can check books out on honor system donated by people who support this project, games, punjabi folk tales, and a surprise here and there :))

the library project is actually the newest addition to project gurmukhi. (inspired by your posts msingh ji on your blog) since it actually involves matter(scientific term).

the problem will be shipping...unless i can find someone cheap to scan all the books in punjab.

don't know...still in it's infancy stage.

A whole lot is depending on how my trip to punjab goes.
